General growing condition lilies crop 2011

For your information, the growing of the lilies is very early this year. We are having nice dry, sunny, rather warm weather this spring since March. The planting went very well. Nature in Holland is approx. 2 weeks earlier than in an average season so far. Click here to check our monthly updated weather statistics on our website

However, in the night of May 4 to May 5 we had very serious night frost, mostly in the north-east part of Holland, like Drenthe province. The temperature was even lower than -7ºC!! This seems to have caused serious damage to many lily fields. The grade of the damage depends on many factors, like the planting date, whether the grower has irrigated the field in time, the kind of soil, the location, the variety, etc.

At this moment, the OT varieties like Robina, Conca d’Or and Manissa seem to be most seriously affected. We expect that it will still take some time before the real damage will become clear, also in the Oriental varieties. Please do not hesitate to contact us if you need any further information.

When visiting the lily fields on May 30, we found very serious frost damage. Not only in the OT varieties like Robina, but also in Oriental varieties. The degree of the damage is sometimes very different between each field and even within one field, depending on the planting date, whether the grower has irrigated the field in time, the kind of soil, the location, the variety, etc.

In the affected fields, many plants stay short because the growing top has been damaged. Now, three weeks after the night frost happened, we can see the clear difference between the unaffected plants which are growing well and the short damaged plants, which are sometimes only half the size of the healthy plants.

The plants of the planting stock turn out to be more susceptible to the frost damage and are damaged most seriously. We have to keep checking the growing conditions. It might be possible that the inside of the stem will become hollow later and that the plants will stop growing during the summertime in August. This is not yet known.

In the meantime, we have also received the announcements of several growers about the expected reduced growing expectations for the commercial sized bulbs for crop 2011. As there is, fortunately, not much experience with such serious frost damage in one year grown lilies it is still difficult to make an exact estimation of the crop results.

This might also influence the outstanding orders, but it is still unclear. Besides, this uncertain situation strongly influences the additional availability of the bulbs; many growers withdraw their (additional) offers.
