Westerkoggeflora

Westerkoggeflora

  • Event held from Friday, January 24, 2020 till Sunday, January 26, 2020

During the weekend of January 24th up to and including January 26th, the 40th – and final - edition of flower show 'Westerkoggeflora' will be held. This last edition revolves around Tulips, the art of Koggenland. Besides all of the tulips that are sent by tulip growers from the Koggenland area, the show is decorated with tulip art. The Westerkoggeflora takes place in Sporthal De Koggehal (De Goorn).

The art of tulips

Tulip cultivation and forcing is an art! The weather conditions, the quality of the tulip bulbs, the preparation, and eventually the forcing: it is a trade in itself. Over and over again, and each year is different! And we will show this to the public for one more time at the end of January. At the same time, various artists show their tulip art.

Between all of the art, the tulip growers show us their best tulips and will compete for one more time. Besides tulips, visitors can also admire decorations of lilies, alstroemerias, roses, chrysanths, and several other flower varieties.

Competition between primary schools

By tradition the students from the primary schools in Koggenland have received a pot with tulip bulbs with the assignment to make them flower perfectly. The most beautiful tulips get podium places at the Westerkoggeflora.

Free entry all weekend

We have organised beautiful shows for more than 40 years that brought in visitors from all over the Netherlands to Koggenland. We invite everyone to have a look one more time in the weekend of January 24th to January 26th. Because it is the last Westerkoggeflora, the entry to the exhibition will be free to the public for the entire weekend! On Sunday there will be music from Gerard Koedooder.

The Westerkoggeflora will take place from January 24th to January 26th, 2020, and is open every day from 10:00 AM. Entry is free.

Lentetuin Breezand

Lentetuin Breezand

  • Event held from Wednesday, March 1, 2023 till Sunday, March 5, 2023

Lentetuin Breezand, a household name in the Kop van Noord-Holland and far beyond. The world's most beautiful indoor bulb flower show is back. Flower bulb growers show off their exceptionally high-quality products to consumers and professionals alike. Tens of thousands of tulips, daffodils, hyacinths, lilies and other colourful spring blooms are presented in creative ways. "There's music in that" is the theme of this high-quality, inspiring and dynamic show.  From Wednesday 1 to Sunday 5 March, thousands of visitors can feast their eyes on the Lentetuin Breezand.

'The calling card of the flower bulb industry', that is the Lentetuin Breezand organised entirely by dozens of volunteers. In the middle of the largest continuous flower bulb area in the world, flower bulb growers, volunteers and sponsors have been joining forces since 1981. After months of preparations, ZAP Breezand's sports complex will once again be transformed into this annual bulb show in a few days' time.

This year's event is all about innovation. For instance, the bulbous flowers will no longer be planted in potting soil, but will be displayed in impressive arrangements. Chief arranger Martin Elling has once again created a creative design. "Think Beatles zebra crossing of flowers, metre-high flower arrangements and dynamic selfie spots," said chairman Dennis Burger. "Photos of visitors at the show will go all over the world, a wonderful signboard of the flower bulb industry!" The music theme is not only reflected in the show's décor and furnishings. Amidst all the floral splendour, artists such as choirs, jazz bands, singer-songwriters and dance groups will provide an extra live experience. Furthermore, enthusiastic students in a greenhouse at Vonk (formerly: Clusius College) will talk about the details of their craft. "Visitors will be surprised by this revamped, contemporary set-up. There are more flowers than ever on display. Spring begins in Breezand!" said Burger.

Besides the bulb flower show, the Lentetuin traditionally also features an Agri Vakbeurs, a spring fair and restaurant. A nice new addition this year is a cosy fairground full of market stalls that brings even more variety in the range of (local) products and services on offer. Children's karaoke, the big craft table and a ball pit will provide entertainment in the children's tent. In addition, children can scavenge for 'mini-musicians' making their way around the Spring Garden. Fun for young, but secretly for old(er) too. Visitors can vote for their favourite bulbous flower for the first time this edition. This year, entrants will not only compete for the coveted Golden Bulb Flower, but also for the Koopman & Co Audience Award.

The Lentetuin, which is one of the five major events of the municipality of Hollands Kroon, hopes to welcome around 20,000 visitors again this year. The official opening for invited guests will be performed on Wednesday evening 1 March by Jeroen Duyster, the new director of the Keukenhof. The Keukenhof has been a new cooperation partner for the Lentetuin since this edition. The Lentetuin board is immensely proud of this.

Lentetuin Breezand takes place during the spring holidays. The event will be open to the public from Wednesday 1 March to Sunday 5 March. Admission tickets are €9.50 for adults and €3.50 for children. Tickets can be ordered on the completely revamped website www.lentetuin.nl. Here you will also find more information about opening hours, the stage play schedule, trade meetings, party nights at Bloemenlust and the shuttle service between Anna Paulowna station and Lentetuin Breezand. Also follow the social media channels for the latest news on this unique event.

Hortus Bulborum

Hortus Bulborum

  • Event held from Saturday, April 1, 2023 till Tuesday, May 16, 2023

The Hortus Bulborum is the only museum garden in the world where you can find over 4,000 different tulip, hyacinth, daffodil and other bulbous cultivars, species and varieties in bloom. Nowhere on this globe you will find such a fine selection of old bulbs in one place. Every spring the Hortus transforms into a treasure trove full of dazzling colours, beautiful shapes and overwhelming fragrances at the foot of the picturesque, parish church in Limmen village, near the historic city of Alkmaar.

The collection boasts tulips dating from 1595, the famous ‘Duc van Tol Red and Yellow’; the oldest known cultivar and dozens of other cultivars which were prizes possession as far as back as the Golden Age. But also 17th century daffodils. The most antique daffodils are said to come from around 1601, like ‘Double Campernelle’ and ‘Albus Plenus Odoratus’. Though the Narcissus pseudonarcissus, also known as the 'Lent Lilly', was already found in English gardens in the 1200s. While the oldest fritillary was already described for the first time in 1577, Fritillaria imperialis ‘Prolifera’. And what to think of fragrant double-flowered hyacinths from the 1800s and crocuses.

Fundamental in this garden, however, is the preservation of heirloom bulbs. Many of them have no commercial value for modern mass production whatsoever. The aim is to maintain these cultivars and safeguard them for the future generations. The preservation work of the Hortus Bulborum goes hand in hand with the work of the professional growers to obtain better cultivars for today’s needs. The collection is a second to none pollen bank in the world to the bulb growing sector.

The current collection contains over 2,600 cultivars of tulips (species and varieties), some 130 hyacinths, around 1,100 daffodils, some 110 crocuses and a few dozen of fritillaries.

The Hortus Bulborum is worth a visit, especially for garden lovers and all those who love rare, heirloom and florist bulbs.

Bloemencorso Bollenstreek

Bloemencorso Bollenstreek

  • Event held from Wednesday, April 19, 2023 till Sunday, April 23, 2023

This spring festival comprises almost a week of activities all connected to the colour and fragrance of the hyacinths, daffodils and tulips from the famous Bulb District.
You can enjoy this spectacle in 2023 from Wednesday 19th to Sunday 23rd April.
The highlight is on Saturday 22nd April 2023 when the parade travels from Noordwijk to Haarlem.

Apart from the Flower Parade of the Bollenstreek being the only event of this calibre that occurs in the springtime, it is the only parade that is constructed and composed of bulb flowers such as hyacinths, tulips and daffodils. It is for this reason that this Flower Parade of the Bollenstreek is known as the face of spring, as no other parade can come close to the unique spring colours and perfumes that surround this one.

The procession consists of about twenty floats and over forty luxurious and special vehicles richly decorated with flowers. For an extra festive character the procession will be accompanied by several bands. There is plenty of room along the whole route for thousands of visitors.

Flower Days Anna Paulowna

Flower Days Anna Paulowna

  • Event held from Saturday, April 22, 2023 till Wednesday, April 26, 2023

From 22 April to 26 April 2023,  Anna Paulowna is dedicated to the colours and scents of the 66th edition of the Flower Days. Throughout the event, you can admire over 100 mosaics, moving pieces and decorated streets and bridges.

Mosaics
The mosaics are paintings made on polystyrene, made by sticking pins topped with flower buds into the surface. Every square yard is covered by over 10.000 buds, which gives you a taste of the amount of work that goes into making every single mosaic. Young and old come together during the Flower Days to create the mosaics and display them in their gardens. Take your bicycle, car, or step on board of one of our dedicated buses to see all mosaics. If you collect a list of participators at either our central information point or the information booths you can find along the side of the road during the Flower Days, you can create your own custom route along all the mosaics. Don’t forget that at night the Flower Days are a true spectacle as well, with most mosaics, bridges and streets lit up.

Complete your day with a visit to one of our many expositions, flea markets, workshops or scavenger hunts. Participation and entry are free.

Dutch Lily Days

Dutch Lily Days

  • Event held from Tuesday, June 6, 2023 till Friday, June 9, 2023

The Dutch Lily Days, which are being organised from 6 to 9 June 2023, are the premiere event to discover the latest trends. A particular focus lies on pollen-free and double-bloomed varieties, and the various participants are looking forward to proudly showing you their innovations. Another important theme is the never-ending search for resistant – and thus more sustainable – lily varieties.

Pollen-free lilies are growing in popularity, with both consumers and florists. Sustainability is and remains another important point. The retail sector keeps setting stricter conditions on the use of crop protection and demands the cleanest possible bulbs and flowers. That presents an interesting challenge for breeders!

Improvement and added value
The global demand for lilies seems to be stabilising. For years, it has been one of the most popular flowers in the world, with a known unique value in many countries. A realistic prediction suggests that the demand is unlikely to grow much more. In the last ten to fifteen years, growth was only achieved by entering new markets, like China and Vietnam. In the existing markets where lilies have been extremely popular for a long time, saturation seems to have been reached, even occasionally a lessening of demand. To keep up the global demand for lilies, we have to search continuously to improve the assortment and add value. Attractive innovations, like the pollen-free and double-bloomed varieties, are supporting that trend.

New participant
Innovation is undoubtedly one of the most important topics of conversation during the Dutch Lily Days. The 14 participating companies each have their own story to tell. Bonne Boots from the new participant Boots Flowerbulbs is eagerly anticipating the event. “I believe in the power of the collective and consider collaboration with colleagues in the marketing of lilies to be essential. That is why we are delighted to be participating in the Dutch Lily Days.”
