Diseases: Thrips (Xylaplothrips subterraneus)Back

Damage by animal organisms

Mainly at the inside of the scales you can see very small, yellow or rust coloured brown, somewhat sunk small spots, which are the result of damage by insects. The younger inside scales are affected first. The parts of the plants above the ground are not damaged. Heavily affected bulbs produce a thin, somewhat pale green plant, which grows badly.

The some millimetres long, black adult insects and the yellow coloured larva are found between the scales, mostly in the bottom part of the bulb, close to the bulb base.

Spreading takes place because the thrips can move from infected bulbs to healthy bulbs during the storage, and in the field also to surrounding plants. Once the bulb has been affected, many successive generations of thrips can continue living in it, even if the bulbs have stayed in the soil for two or three years. This pest seldom occurs in Holland, probably thanks to the hot water treatment of the planting stock, which is done every year. The thrips Frankliniella lilivora is only found in Holland on bulbs that are imported from foreign countries.
