Damage caused by fungus The plants remain behind in their growth and sometimes fade suddenly. The leaves turn yellow, starting from the bottom of the stem. A purplish brown spot appears on the base of the stem. The infected stem tissue shrinks, and the stem often breaks on that spot, which is not hard.Diseases: Foot rot (Phytophthora species) 
Infection that starts in the bulb is also known. In this case the sprout is already affected from the bulb base and breaks in an early stage.
